I grew up isolated by a family that oscillated between negligent and actively abusive, so TV and the early internet were often my only escape. Among others, Captain Picard was more influential as a model of what adulthood should look like than what I experienced at home.
So it's been an unusual night and morning as I find out how many others had the same experience as tributes pour in. I didn't really have good influences in person growing up, so the crew on TNG stood in for a lot of what I would have gotten from good family and community. Patrick Stewart was a model human in the characters he played, and by all accounts it was how he really was.
The same experience I mentioned up there makes it hard to find the words to express myself and then commit to writing and sharing the words. For now, I'll share someone else's. Read the comments.
